Simon Trevers, Lead Solutions Architect, will be hosting the Peas in a Pod discussion “Best Practice with BYOD in High-Stakes Summative Assessment”

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) has the potential to overcome a key barrier in the global upscaling of e-Assessment. In some scenarios, it can be a real game-changer, but it’s not perfect. With every year we take a step forward, but we need to learn from our experiences and share them with others. This will be an extremely useful session to connect those that have already used BYOD for high-stakes delivery with those that are thinking about it as a solution to their scaling problems. In this session, we will discuss lessons learned from hardware, software, and connectivity successes and failures. We’ll also explore the processes used by delegates for candidate communication, test day problem solving, and the mitigation of risks associated with malpractice. Following this session, we hope to have a better understanding of the approach and ideas we can all take back to our businesses to improve our use of BYOD as an assessment strategy. This informal discussion is designed to give each delegate a platform to share and learn so that as an industry we can move forward with confidence together.

Richard London, Head of Design and User Experience, will present as part of the Ignite Sessions on the topic of “The Democratisation of the User Experience”

Why do we spend so much money, time and effort building products for users, but we seldom involve them in the creation? It’s very easy to let personal bias get in the way of real user feedback, and when we do finally involve the user, we take their opinion with a ‘pinch of salt’. We often end up with a list of improvements/’phase two’ features that sit in a backlog. There’s a User Experience (UX) revolution underway, and the assessment sector needs to start listening to the voice of the user. They need to be involved from the start, and in every step of the journey. They need to have a voice, a vote, a say and that feedback needs to carry weight in your design. User experience or universal design isn’t a black box that we feed requirements into and designs come out, it’s a team game. In this session we’ll provide three top tips on how everyone can start to rethink the way they consider UX, how users are part of this, and how it doesn’t need to cost the earth. We’ll present ideas on the future role of the user in product and service design and development that everyone at EATP can take back to their teams.

Talk to me about: Technical Requirements | Integration

Simon has worked in the educational and assessment technology industry for more than 12 years and has a wealth of experience in designing and delivering a diverse range of interactive learning platforms, VLE, educational data management and online assessment services for customers across the UK and overseas.

Simon joined BTL in 2017 as Lead Solutions Architect and has been focused for the last year on working closely with a number of customers to ensure a steady transition from Surpass 11 to Surpass 12. Simon enjoys working alongside customers to understand their business needs and operational requirements, in order to deliver the most appropriate solutions for each organization. Prior to working in the educational and assessment industry, Simon was involved in healthcare communications technology for almost 10 years, delivering services to hospitals in the UK, US, and the Netherlands.

Having graduated from The University of Reading with a degree in Geography, Simon’s more recent professional qualifications include an ITIL Foundation Certificate in IT Service Management (2017) and he is also a Certified Scrum Product Owner (2016).

Jim Crawford
Jim Crawford, Business Development Director

Talk to me about: Business Processes for CBT | Assessment Technology | Contact Jim

In addition to managing the day-to-day actions of the Business Development Team, Jim works closely with technical departments in BTL, driven by the Surpass Community’s desire for innovation and the integration of new emerging technologies directly into Surpass: The Assessment Platform.
He is also a regular speaker at assessment events with a focus on the international audience.
Jim’s passion for creating better assessments started alongside his career in the education sector, when in 2005 he worked on e-Learning design for some of the world’s most recognizable brands such as HSBC, UNESCO and Boots.
In 2010 he joined BTL’s Content Production team, before later moving into the Service Design Team as the Product Owner responsible for overseeing the design and development of the new SaaS version of Surpass.
Following the release of Surpass as a SAAS product, Jim’s journey through BTL and involvement with the various stages of service involved with Surpass, made him a perfect first point of contact for new prospects, filling a pivotal role in coordinating a variety of teams within BTL, ensuring the product meets the vision of the growing Surpass Community.

Lizzie Anstiss

As Business Development Manager, Lizzie helps organizations that are looking for a new assessment platform to understand how the Surpass solution can meet their requirements and enhance their existing processes.

Lizzie joined BTL in 2015 after completing her Master’s degree at Leeds Beckett University, and was part of the BTL Surpass Documentation and Training Team until 2017. In this role, Lizzie took responsibility for co-ordinating and delivering training to the Surpass community, providing her with excellent Surpass product knowledge and a good understanding of client requirements when moving to Surpass.

 

Lizzie went on to join the Business Development team as a Bid Manager, co-ordinating bids and proposals and working with BTL teams to deliver timely responses to prospective Surpass partners. Managing bids provided Lizzie with detailed knowledge of what organizations look for with a new assessment system, which Lizzie uses to support potential Surpass users through the process of selecting and implementing a new solution.

Talk to me about: User Experience | Requirement Gathering Contact Richard

Richard began his career in the assessment industry in 2005 as a multimedia designer for BTL. He was promoted to Head of Design in 2015, and under his leadership the team has grown from two to twelve. He has been responsible for working together with other departments to introduce various processes such as Task Modelling and Complex Process Analysis, which help to promote understanding within Surpass Community organisations, identify potential pain points and ultimately maximise efficiency within existing and emerging workflows. He has also worked closely with other colleagues to implement the Surpass Accessibility Team.
During his time at BTL, Richard has put these processes into practice working on high-level projects alongside leading testing organizations including British Council, Prometric and the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA). However, it is his patient and supportive attitude, and a willingness to listen and embrace new ideas from his team, which has made him instrumental to key integration and development projects across the Surpass Community.

Ian represents our Account Management team and specializes in migration and implementation.

Certified in ITIL and PRINCE2, Ian has managed a multitude of large projects for Surpass Users in the past 10 years. He is currently responsible for managing the strategic partnership between BTL and Prometric, overseeing the migration to Surpass as the primary test driver in their expansive Test Center Network.
